How to Choose a Peptide Testing Lab

The nine-step evaluation

1. 1

   Confirm accreditation and its scope

   Ask for the method validation package and read the scope of methods it covers. Validation is granted per method family, so a lab can be validated for one technique and run your peptide under an unvalidated method. Ask which methods the documentation actually covers.

2. 2

   Verify independence from suppliers

   Check ownership, referral relationships, and whether the lab also sells peptides. A COA from a lab with a commercial interest in the material is not independent verification, regardless of how the report is formatted.

3. 3

   Ask which methods run your peptide

   You want reverse-phase HPLC with UV detection at 214 nm for purity and LC-MS or ESI-MS for identity. If moisture, endotoxin, heavy metals, or residual solvents matter for your end use, confirm Karl Fischer, LAL, ICP-MS, and GC-MS capability in house rather than subcontracted.

   Require raw data with the COA

   A purity number without the chromatogram cannot be audited. Ask for a redacted sample COA before you commit and confirm it includes the integrated chromatogram, the mass spectrum, and a pass/fail specification table.

   Check method validation for your peptide class

   Long sequences like retatrutide, blends, and finished products such as dissolvable strips each need different sample prep and gradients. Ask whether the lab has validated a method for material like yours, and what the limit of quantitation is.

   Compare turnaround and pricing in writing

   Get per-sample pricing, panel pricing, and turnaround from sample receipt in writing. Large CROs commonly run 4-6 weeks; specialty peptide labs are faster. ACS quotes 9-11 business days standard.

7. 7

   Confirm sample handling and chain of custody

   Ask how samples are logged, stored, and retained, and whether blind or coded submission is supported. Blind submission removes any expectation bias from the result.

   Ask what happens on a failing result

   A good lab will re-run a confirmatory injection, describe the impurity profile, and explain the failure mode rather than simply reporting a number below spec. Ask whether re-testing is included or billed separately.

9. 9

   Send one paid pilot sample before committing volume

   Before moving a testing program, submit a single sample and evaluate the COA quality, communication, and actual turnaround against what was quoted. One pilot sample answers more than any sales conversation.

Benchmarks to compare against

Green flags

• Sends a redacted sample COA on request, chromatogram included.
• Names the method, column, wavelength, and gradient without hesitation.
• Supports blind or coded sample submission.
• States turnaround from sample receipt, not from order date.
• Explains the impurity profile behind a failing result.

Red flags

• An ISO logo with no certificate number or scope document.
• Purity reported without a chromatogram or a detection wavelength.
• The lab also sells or resells peptides.
• Template COAs that repeat the same batch number and test date.
• Refusal to put turnaround or per-sample pricing in writing.
