How the calculator works

Peptide degradation follows Arrhenius kinetics — the reaction rate roughly doubles for every 10°C increase in temperature. The Q10 coefficient captures this relationship. For most synthetic peptides, Q10 sits between 2 and 3; we use Q10 = 2.5 as a conservative default consistent with ICH Q1A(R2) accelerated stability principles.

The calculator combines three factors:

  • Temperature — every 10°C drop multiplies shelf life by ~2.5×.
  • Physical form — reconstituted (aqueous) peptides degrade roughly 10× faster than lyophilized powder due to hydrolysis and aggregation.
  • Sequence sensitivity — peptides containing methionine (oxidation), cysteine (disulfide scrambling), or tryptophan (photo-degradation) shorten shelf life by ~50%. Modified peptides like GLP-1 agonists are also more sensitive.

The output is a useful estimate, not a regulatory shelf life. If you need a documented expiration date for an IND, NDA, or batch release, you need empirical stability testing on your specific peptide and formulation.

How long do lyophilized peptides last in the freezer?

Most lyophilized peptides stored at −20°C remain stable for 18–24 months. At −80°C, shelf life can extend to 3–5 years. Light, moisture, and oxidation-prone residues shorten this window.

How long do reconstituted peptides last?

Reconstituted peptides in aqueous solution typically last 2–4 weeks at 4°C and 6–12 months at −20°C. They degrade roughly 10x faster than lyophilized form.

What temperature should I store peptides at?

Lyophilized: −20°C is standard, −80°C for long-term archive. Reconstituted: 4°C for short-term use within 1–2 weeks, otherwise aliquot and freeze at −20°C or lower.

Is this calculator scientifically accurate?
